Day 1: Pray
for open doors
Americans will never forget September
11, 2001. The events of that day will be etched
into our memory forever. But in the wake of tragedy,
in Afghanistan God began breaking open doors once
tightly barred to the gospel.
Read
Mehdi's story and experience the months
surrounding September 11th with a Hazara family.
Prior to the attack on the World
Trade Center, few Americans had heard of Taliban
or Osama bin Laden, but the people of Afghanistan
knew them well. After columns of Russian tanks retreated
from Afghan soil, the Taliban seized power and cruelly
dominated the country by enforcing the strictest
form of Islamic law. The Taliban sealed the borders
of the country refusing access even to journalists
and aid workers. There was no one to chronicle the
indescribable crimes against humanity committed
by the regime. Year after year, hope grew dimmer.
Even the heavens seemed to respond
to the curse of Taliban, and refused to yield rain.
The drought that followed was as oppressive as the
cruel regime.
But this is a new day in Afghanistan.
An international coalition led by the United States
defeated the Taliban. Although it is still dangerous
to share the message of the gospel and travel within
the country is difficult, doors of opportunity are
gradually beginning to open. Pray that God
would continue to open doors so that his living
word can bring hope to a people broken by twenty
years of war.
The current peace in Afghanistan
is precarious. Doors now open could easily slam
shut. Pray that during this critical time
churches around the world would be faithful to carry
the message of God's grace and mercy to the Hazara.
“Indeed,
I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them
out ... and deliver them from all the places where
they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day.”
Ezekiel 34:11,12
