Pray for Hazara refugees seeking asylum abroad

19 Jan 2004

Story
Marge sighs as she returns to her home after accompanying Najib to his 3 hour immigration interview. "I have grown to love these helpless people who have come to our country in search of a life free from war and poverty." Marge and husband, Don, along with 2 other couples from their church, work with Hazara refugees who are applying for protection visas from the government. It all began when Marge read a newspaper account of the needs of these refugees who are in detention centers in her city. She enlisted others in her church to minister to the physical needs of the refugees. "We supplied clothing and shoes first. Then we realized that there was much more that we could do to show God’s love." Marge and others provided rides to doctor offices, helped fill out complicated government forms, and aided the refugees in other practical ways. Most refugees are illiterate and have no way of understanding a new culture without some assistance. When asked how she witnessed to these Muslims, she smiled and responded, "When we show Jesus' love in our actions, they are eager to know how they can have Jesus in their lives." Please pray for Hazara refugees who are awaiting government decisions on their application for asylum. Many have come to saving faith in Jesus, and would face certain death if returned to Afghanistan where it is illegal to convert to Christianity. To date, there has been only one acceptance for asylum out of one hundred applications. Pray that God will give new believers courage and peaceful hearts as they wait to hear the outcome. Ask that He raise up more Christian workers to minister to refugees in countries all around the world – perhaps in your own neighborhood. May we have eyes to see the harvest!
